Explore your creativity

Are you creative?

Children love to create and use their imagination. However at some point in the process of growing up we begin to place the creative label on people. Perhaps you are one of those persons that heard that you were creative? You did well in art class and liked to draw and paint pictures. Or perhaps you heard that another was creative and inferred your own lack of creativity? If you felt that you weren't creative you probably dismissed opportunities to explore your creativity. You took the mandatory art class and then moved on to better things.

The truth is we are all creative. Creativity is part of the divine imprint on our lives, read Genesis (the book not the band). I believe that discounting your creativity robs you of an aspect of joy that you were meant to pursue. When I was younger my older brother Russ was a skilled sketch artist. In contrast my abilities were limited and therefore I interpretted that as a lack on my part. My 5th grade art teacher told me that I was good at drawing trees so I would constantly draw trees and nothing else. My perceived lack of creativity limited me from the necessary risks required to create.

Thankfully as I grew older I discovered that my creativity expressed itself in different areas. It takes creativity to craft a great lesson plan or to write a math song. It takes creativity to deisgn a successful blitz. It takes creativity to motivate a young person. It takes creativity to put a video together and creativity to plan an event.

Have you explored your own creative gift recently? I would encourage you to set aside some time in your schedule for the purpose of enjoying the creative you. This is one aspect that I will be incorporating in my life in 2012 and I would invite you to do so as well. If creativity is a gift that God has given us all, let us use it to the fullest.
